He was born on the 1799 in Geneva. His father was a professional painter and caricature artist. In 1832 he was appointed Professor of Literature at the University of Geneva. After that, he became an author of short stories and occasionally entertained his students by drawing caricatures. The first of his work is Histoire de M. Vieux Bois. It was completed by 1827 but not published until 1837. It consisted of 30 pages, each contain one to six drawn panels with a caption narration below. It was translated and republished in the United States in 1842 as The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck. Topffer's stories were produced by autography, a variation of lithography that allowed him to draw on specially prepared paper with a pen. This
process allowed for a loose line, quicker and freer than engraving, the
usual process for printed illustration at the time.
